Camping Alésia, Venarey-les-Laumes

Camping Alésia, located just outside the small town of Venarey-les-Laumes and in close proximity to the Burgundy Canal, is an ideal base for cyclists wishing to explore the canal and this region.

Camping Alésia is a municipal campsite of which the town should be very proud. Though on the periphery of the residential area the site proved to be very quiet and security proved not to be a problem.

Along the northern boundary of the campsite is Nid à la Caille, a lake (best viewed with Google Earth) and a beach, presumably man made. An area is designated for swimming, another for fishing. Volley ball, showering facilities and refreshments are also available and I understand supervision of children is provided for at certain periods. The Burgundy canal is easily accessed by cycle or on foot by exiting the campsite and immediately turning left over the footbridge. Here a dedicated cycle route leads past Nid à la Caille towards the Burgundy Canal. The route crosses the main road and winds through quiet residential streets before joining the canal towpath at Lock Mussy 53, Port du canal de Bourgogne.

The town of Venarey-les-Laumes, though cut in two by the TVG railway system, has most facilities including a supermarket, many small shops, sporting facilities and a railway station.
